New UFC Game is Siiiiiiiiick

18 May 2009 73 Comments

So I got my hands on a copy of the new UFC game. I was really impressed by the demo, but the actual game is much better because there is so much more variety.

I was a little bit worried about not liking my character or having issues with his move set, but I really can’t complain. I think like most of the characters in the game, they fight exactly like their real life counterpart. I was playing last night and my friend Matt said “Its not fair that they custom made a character that is a bad ass at fighting the way you like to fight!”

We have been playing exhibition for the most part, but have done some of the classic fights stuff too. If you have any questions, post them and I will answer as many as I can.

What do you think of the career mode?

  • Joe Lauzon (author) said:

Haven’t really played career mode yet. We messed around with the create a fighter a little bit, but that was it. We will start digging into that soon.

  • Marius (from Germany) said:

    So, how is the create-a-fighter-mode?

  • Jordan said:

Are you annoyed that you can’t take yourself through career mode?

  • Daht said:

Whats your xboxlive handle? Have you gotten any virtual revenge on anyone that you haven’t been able to get back in the octagon yet?

  • Ian said:

Who did you want to give the first beating to in the game? Did you win? =)

  • kay said:

How deep is the Create a Fighter mode?

  • WatchinMMA said:

have your tried the game online? if so how is it and what kind of options do you have?

  • Rich said:

I think i’m going to buy a PS3 just for this game :P
Glad you like it. Is stephan bonnar in the game?

  • Joe Lauzon (author) said:

Haven’t done much with Create a fighter. I made a guy with all his points on standup striking and takedown defense… and put all his point into strength and he was absolutely awful. I haven’t gone and made a legit fighter though. The depth of detail on what you can change is ridiculous though.

I was a little annoyed about not being able to take my own guy through career mode, but thats how it goes. I think I am in the minority about worrying about it.

First fight I had was me playing as me, against my friend Matt as Spencer Fisher. I knocked him out.

I played online a little bit… my first match I met up with someone playing as BJ Penn… who knocked me out in 12 seconds.

Can you fight out of your weightclass ie. Joe Lauzon vs. Gonzaga?

  • Jenn said:

Are there unlockable characters? I know Mask, Punkass, and Skyscape are in the game. Are they available right away? Thanks Joe!

  • nestor said:

Helllo Joe,first of al big fan of yours and your brother, Glad you liked the game I paid for mine already just awaiting its release. Are you able to use fighters outside of their weight division? If so does it affect the appearance of the fighter?

  • tyetye said:

Since it is realistic to your actuals, Can you use the game to practice against fighters you wish to fight and get an advantage? Ha

  • Salty said:

I can’t wait to pick this up tonight, I’ve been playing the demo non-stop.

  • billy said:

can you do a cpu vs cpu mode? like make your own matches to watch? thanks man!

  • Erick said:

I am dissapointed about not being able to play as you in career mode. I’m sure i’ll still like the game and I plan on getting it tomorrow when it comes out.

  • Joe Lauzon (author) said:

You can only fight people in the same weight class… although some guys have more than one weight class (BJ, Anderson Silva, etc). I was wondering if guys would look different in different weight classes, but didn’t notice any difference. I thought BJ would be most notable, but didnt see it. He may have been, but I don’t think he was.

There are unlockable guys… but I havent unlocked any yet.

I bet you could do CPU vs CPU… I havent dont it though.

  • Tyler said:

Have you noticed a difference in preset moves for different types ie. muay thai/kickboxing bjj/judo(other than means of going to the ground) etc.

  • Joe Lauzon (author) said:

Each style has different moves… and I think there are multiple presets within each one. I think there are a few different boxing styles, different kickboxing styles, etc…

  • Burton said:

If you’ve played with BJ penn or anyone with a very signature move (such as how BJ always trys to trap an arm when he takes your back) did any of that make it into the game? Not just with Penn but with other fighters…

  • kieran said:

so whats your bro gonna do, create himself and fight eachother?

  • Christian Kapono Estaniqui said:

    Joe,

What impact do you think this game will have on amatuer MMA?

I can see it going one of two ways:

Postive- It can see it possibly raising the level of amatuer MMA as THOSE guys (you know who they are) can “live their dreams” of fighting on a gaming device as opposed to having to come to the harsh realization that they are not fighters in the actual cage.

Negative- I can see it becoming addicting to some amateur fighter and they miss mat time/rolling/sparring due to playing this game haha!!!

    Thanks!

  • JB said:

Are they only different subs for judo stylists or additional ones that you can’t do with either Chuck or Shogun in the demo? For instance a gogoplata, omoplata(I can transition only with it), D’arce, etc.

  • Joe Lauzon (author) said:

BJ seems to have automatic head movement… Anderson throws crazy double kicks… lots of signature little moves.

Judo is more about sweeps and trips than submissions or guard work. I havent seen too many crazy submissions other than a mounted triangle and flying armlocks. There are head and arm chokes from north-south… omoplatas seem like sweeps more so than submissions… havent seen any gogos.

  • Chris Bradshaw said:

Joe, are you able to do your crazy take downs like in real life ?

  • Joe Lauzon (author) said:

No flying heel hook or firemans carry, unfortunately. I didn’t expect them to be in it though.

  • kay said:

Are you happy with the stats they gave you in the game?

  • Burton said:

So, overall would you say most of the fighers you’ve played with felt like different fighters rather than just “kickboxing/wrestling” templates applied to them?

  • Eddy said:

hey Joe, how did you get the game so early? Also which belt are going to collect first in career mode :P ?

  • Tyler said:

can u beat up joe rogan

  • lil pat said:

is ur signature move the heel hook??

  • Eisen Punnoose said:

How are the loading times? I’m picking my game up tomorrow!! I’m so excited.

  • Nate Lawson said:

    Hey Joe,
in an interview recently you said you were going to create the real joe lauzon. Have you done that yet, and how do you like the creation mode if you have?

  • Orlando said:

Gotten a Gogoplata yet? I’ve been trying to figure out if they have arm triangles, do they?

  • Goze said:

What kind of scores do the judges give, are they pretty accurate?

  • Prodigy x said:

    Joe,

Are u playing this on 360 or ps3? If 360 I challenge u lol I suck but luckily I’ve played worse people online 5-0 =)

  • Pam O'Neil said:

Okay – so Rylie, Chuck’s nephew wants to know which system can you buy the game for – is it only for PS3? or can you buy for PS2? Anyways – he can’t wait – sounds siiiiiiick

  • Salty said:

the game is so good, picked it up at midnite and played for a good hour or so, 3-0 in my UFC career so far all KO via GNP stoppages. Tried playing online and some kid picked Brock Lesnar and just Lay and Prayed the entire first round, and in the second I got caught and knocked down for the TKO stoppage… i hope everyone doesn’t end up picking heavyweight just to play as lesnar.

  • Joe Lauzon (author) said:

The stats are pretty good for my guy. The main thing is my cardio is not very good… so I get tired fast and taken down easily and submitted easily. But if you pace yourself and go in short flurries, he does well. My problem is that I keep pushing the pace and end up gassing and losing.

Each fighter has a unique feel for sure… definitely don’t feel like templates. Also, each has different strengths so if guys were identical in moves, you would still play with them different based on what they were good/weak at.

No leg locks in the game other than the kneebar. So no toe holds, straight ankles or heel hooks.

No gogoplata or arm triangle either.

Load time is alright…. not amazingly fast but its not annoying. There is a few seconds of load time before the fight goes and thats it.

Haven’t made “the real Joe Lauzon” yet. I will though… pretty soon.

To be honest, not sure we have gone to decision yet. We have gotten close… but don’t think we have seen one yet.

    I am playing on 360.

Pam, Its out for 360 and PS3… but not PS2.

  • Prodigy x said:

If anyone wants a decent match on 360 add prodlgy x
The I is actually a lower case L and I don’t remember if the o is a zero or a letter lol. But if the profile says im 915 team hawaii then that’s me. Hope to figth some of u soon

  • Mike said:

The worst part about the game is that if you disconnect it does not count as a loss, so as soon as you start beating someone online the sore losers just turn off the xbox. Until they fix it online is a waste of time so I am going to go more into career mode and Classic fights.

Have you had any issues Joe?

  • Mike C said:

Hey Joe, is it true that Clay Guida isn’t on the game becasue of his long hair was messing up the game play? And also that all southpaws are switched to conventional?

  • liamd said:

hey joe how deos it feel playing as yourself in the game

and any chance you can say when you expect to be fighting again looking faward to your return

  • Pam O'Neil said:

Thanks – much appreciqated – sounds like a blast – must be a trip seeing yourself in a video game.

  • Alex Hill said:

Been playing since the demo came out, nice to finnaly play the real game with all the fighters…. and i must say youre guy has the quickest 1,2 combos, i can just sit there all day xyxyxyxyx.. but that would be no fun, pretty solid at takedowns, and a good ground game just like in real life…. it is RIDICULOUS how much detail you can add to a character, i mean body hair and ear damage….. really got me… good stuff man… whats your live id so i can get a match with you sometime??

  • Alex Hill said:

ohh and im 8-0 in carreer mode right now…. those tapots dont come easy, i cant feel my thumbss after spinin the right analog so much, im sure you know what i mean..

  • Bob Fobian said:

I have noticed that ground and pound is extremely difficult against BJJ’ers. They endlessly do complex reversals, and submission attempts, making it impossible to get any good damage at higher difficulties. I even notice that the guys who are famous for ground and pounding through even the best defenses (GSP and Hughes) aren’t able to do so in this game. It’s a bit disappointing if you want to be a powerhouse wrestler, because ground and pound is very fun, and it’s not ideally recreated in this game. The game is a blast though…very much fun.

  • Bob Fobian said:

By the way…Joe…is this really you? My wife and I are huge fans…just wanted to know…how about posting a picture saying “Yes Bob…it’s really me” :)

  • Joe Lauzon (author) said:

I didn’t know you could avoid a loss by disconecting, but I bet they fix that.

Clay is not in the game. I don’t know why for sure, but I heard his hair was an issue.

There are no guys in the southpaw stance, everyone is switched to orthodox. If you aren’t looking for it though, you wouldnt even notice.

Weird playing as myself, but pretty cool. I don’t think I will be fighting until the spring or so.

I’m a big fan of XY over and over and over, haha.

Grappling is pretty complex… I am still learning but its WAY deeper than we originally thought. If you button mash you will do a little bit… but if you really know what you are doing you can put a serious beating on someone.

And yea… this is really me. Not gonna post a picture… but its me.

  • Salty said:

I finally became the Lightweight Champ last night, I was 6-0 fighting on short notice against Gray Maynard, and got KO’d in the third. My next fight was against Joe, I rocked him from mount in the first and felt like getting an submission win, as i did it i realized he has the best stats for submission offence and defense in the LW division…. needless to say he reversed it and subbed me by kiumra… my only 2 losses….

    (I ko’d him in a rematch though)

  • Jason said:

Joe, the game is sick!!!!!!! i played a player match online today and submitted a guy via armbar. He used thiago tavares and i used you haha… newayz he rocked me real good early using combinations of flying knees and head kicks but i weathered the storm and caught him with an armbar three mins into the first round. It was awesome, got up and went yellin through the living room and the girlfriend was like WTf are you doing… haha
by the way, do u know how to pull off a triangle choke or do only certain characters have certain submission moves. I kept trying using nate diaz but all i could do was a knee bar/leg lock or whatever…
hope your knee is coming along and look forward to seeing you in the octagon again man

  • Greg said:

Jason, I know that for most characters, including joe, you simply get a person in your guard and you can attempt the triangle choke by pressing the submission stick in.

  • Salty said:

To do the triangle in guard on the Xbox press RB and the Right Stick in. if you just push the right stick in you go for an armbar. Do the same when your in mount to try for a triangle as well..

  • Alex Hill said:

nice, i havent played with everyone but so far i find your character does have the fastest 1,2…i also grew up in EB, so its nice to see another person from there succeed, my bro Jeff is a proffesional golfer now……and big ups to your little bro doin his thing……so who do you like in the hughs and serra matchup?

  • Kickstart said:

off topic but Joe, do you know anything about the Bridgewater Grappling tournament coming up? Good competition? Worth the time?

  • Salty said:

I hope the tourament is good, I just pre-registered today for it… I’m thinking about going Intermediate and Absolute even though i should do Beginner and Intermediate

  • Joe Lauzon (author) said:

Not sure about the tournament. You could throw a rock from the roof of the building my gym is in and hit BSC campus. I don’t know if I am going or not through… Graduation party that day so we will see. Rick Caldwell is running it with Ryan Ciotoli, so I am sure it will be run pretty well… just dont know how the turnout will be.

  • Eddie said:

Hey…whats up man..hope your recovering with your leg

but the GAME IS GREAT!! only thing i dont like is on career mode that you have to create a guy only…i was hoping you could pick someone then work your way up to get the belt. Anyways good luck with everything man. and also how the hell do you finish off a sunbmittion in the game i always get half way there…i get the arm or lef and then i can never finish him off

  • Kickstart said:

Thanks Joe, I might do or or maybe I’ll throw them rocks you were talking about

    -KS

  • Jacob said:

Hey Joe, a little disappointed I can’t play through career mode with you and win the title :( I noticed you said you were going to create the “real” Joe Lauzon for yourself in one of the comments here – any chance of posting the create a fighter options you use somewhere so I (and other keen fans) can create you for use in career mode?

Oh and I just beat Anderson Silva for the Middleweight title with a nice superman punch and I noticed you “fought” on the same card I did against Gray Maynard and won KO of the night, but not only that – you managed to back up 4 days later to TKO Frank Edgar…. You’re a machine ;)

  • Joe Lauzon (author) said:

I actually haven’t created “the real Joe Lauzon” yet. I am not sure if I will… its way more satisfying telling Matt Perry that THQ already did it for me.

  • Justin Hansen said:

I love the game but after fighting 30 fight and being 29-6 and won the title it made me retire do you know how to make my guy come out of retirement

  • Erick said:

I think it is too easy to knock someone out and too hard to get a submission. I have played about 40 matches on exibition and I haven’t gotten a single submission victory. Every attempt gets reversed! I have around 30 knockout victories. I did get one submission victory online. They really need to fix this in future games.

  • Andrew said:

hey joe… your such a demon in this game! everyone i fight in career mode i usually destroy, but every time i get a match with you i get submitted… you’ve made me tap like 5 times… but i don’t get mad cause its just a game and if it was a real MMA fight i don’t think i’d make it through the first 30 seconds against you… keep up the good work!

  • Elliot said:

I’ve been enjoying the game, and my ground game has greatly improved after a week of playing compared to when I started. I’ve also become very good with the counter system as it has lead to the few submission wins I have gotten. I am currently working on trying unlock Mask from TapouT. Currently i’m running in the Lightweight division, and most recently knocked out Gray Maynard in the 3rd round. I kinda wish the levelling up didn’t take so long for as quickly as you fly up the rankings. I still say they should use The Ultimate Fighter to open the career mode, and not start you out at an overall of 30. Just my two cents though.

  • Drew said:

so everytime i get mount on an opponent he hugs me and i cant posture up and rain down punches. i try the minor transition of moving the stick up and to the left/right, and all i do is pass to side control. no matter how much/little i move the stick thats what i do. please help!

  • nick said:

i usually let them try to move around then let go of the hug so i can punch

  • Tong Po said:

Hey, is it difficult to get used to the controls? I hear the game is pretty awesome but that some of the moves are hard to learn with the controls…
