New UFC Game is Siiiiiiiiick
by Joe Lauzon on May.18, 2009, under Blog
So I got my hands on a copy of the new UFC game. I was really impressed by the demo, but the actual game is much better because there is so much more variety.
I was a little bit worried about not liking my character or having issues with his move set, but I really can’t complain. I think like most of the characters in the game, they fight exactly like their real life counterpart. I was playing last night and my friend Matt said “Its not fair that they custom made a character that is a bad ass at fighting the way you like to fight!”
We have been playing exhibition for the most part, but have done some of the classic fights stuff too. If you have any questions, post them and I will answer as many as I can.

What do you think of the career mode?
May 18th, 2009 on 9:53 am
Haven’t really played career mode yet. We messed around with the create a fighter a little bit, but that was it. We will start digging into that soon.
May 18th, 2009 on 9:56 am
So, how is the create-a-fighter-mode?
May 18th, 2009 on 10:00 am
Are you annoyed that you can’t take yourself through career mode?
May 18th, 2009 on 10:04 am
Whats your xboxlive handle? Have you gotten any virtual revenge on anyone that you haven’t been able to get back in the octagon yet?
May 18th, 2009 on 10:08 am
Who did you want to give the first beating to in the game? Did you win? =)
May 18th, 2009 on 10:10 am
How deep is the Create a Fighter mode?
May 18th, 2009 on 10:12 am
have your tried the game online? if so how is it and what kind of options do you have?
May 18th, 2009 on 10:19 am
I think i’m going to buy a PS3 just for this game
Glad you like it. Is stephan bonnar in the game?
May 18th, 2009 on 10:20 am
Haven’t done much with Create a fighter. I made a guy with all his points on standup striking and takedown defense… and put all his point into strength and he was absolutely awful. I haven’t gone and made a legit fighter though. The depth of detail on what you can change is ridiculous though.
I was a little annoyed about not being able to take my own guy through career mode, but thats how it goes. I think I am in the minority about worrying about it.
First fight I had was me playing as me, against my friend Matt as Spencer Fisher. I knocked him out.
I played online a little bit… my first match I met up with someone playing as BJ Penn… who knocked me out in 12 seconds.

Can you fight out of your weightclass ie. Joe Lauzon vs. Gonzaga?
May 18th, 2009 on 11:40 am
Are there unlockable characters? I know Mask, Punkass, and Skyscape are in the game. Are they available right away? Thanks Joe!
May 18th, 2009 on 11:56 am
Helllo Joe,first of al big fan of yours and your brother, Glad you liked the game I paid for mine already just awaiting its release. Are you able to use fighters outside of their weight division? If so does it affect the appearance of the fighter?
May 18th, 2009 on 12:22 pm
Since it is realistic to your actuals, Can you use the game to practice against fighters you wish to fight and get an advantage? Ha
May 18th, 2009 on 12:57 pm
I can’t wait to pick this up tonight, I’ve been playing the demo non-stop.
May 18th, 2009 on 1:14 pm
can you do a cpu vs cpu mode? like make your own matches to watch? thanks man!
May 18th, 2009 on 1:27 pm
I am dissapointed about not being able to play as you in career mode. I’m sure i’ll still like the game and I plan on getting it tomorrow when it comes out.
May 18th, 2009 on 1:58 pm
You can only fight people in the same weight class… although some guys have more than one weight class (BJ, Anderson Silva, etc). I was wondering if guys would look different in different weight classes, but didn’t notice any difference. I thought BJ would be most notable, but didnt see it. He may have been, but I don’t think he was.
There are unlockable guys… but I havent unlocked any yet.
I bet you could do CPU vs CPU… I havent dont it though.
May 18th, 2009 on 2:11 pm
Have you noticed a difference in preset moves for different types ie. muay thai/kickboxing bjj/judo(other than means of going to the ground) etc.
May 18th, 2009 on 2:30 pm
Each style has different moves… and I think there are multiple presets within each one. I think there are a few different boxing styles, different kickboxing styles, etc…
May 18th, 2009 on 2:38 pm
If you’ve played with BJ penn or anyone with a very signature move (such as how BJ always trys to trap an arm when he takes your back) did any of that make it into the game? Not just with Penn but with other fighters…
May 18th, 2009 on 2:43 pm
so whats your bro gonna do, create himself and fight eachother?
May 18th, 2009 on 2:47 pm
Joe,
What impact do you think this game will have on amatuer MMA?
I can see it going one of two ways:
Postive- It can see it possibly raising the level of amatuer MMA as THOSE guys (you know who they are) can “live their dreams” of fighting on a gaming device as opposed to having to come to the harsh realization that they are not fighters in the actual cage.
Negative- I can see it becoming addicting to some amateur fighter and they miss mat time/rolling/sparring due to playing this game haha!!!
Thanks!

Are they only different subs for judo stylists or additional ones that you can’t do with either Chuck or Shogun in the demo? For instance a gogoplata, omoplata(I can transition only with it), D’arce, etc.
May 18th, 2009 on 3:35 pm
BJ seems to have automatic head movement… Anderson throws crazy double kicks… lots of signature little moves.
Judo is more about sweeps and trips than submissions or guard work. I havent seen too many crazy submissions other than a mounted triangle and flying armlocks. There are head and arm chokes from north-south… omoplatas seem like sweeps more so than submissions… havent seen any gogos.
May 18th, 2009 on 4:48 pm
Joe, are you able to do your crazy take downs like in real life ?
May 18th, 2009 on 4:58 pm
No flying heel hook or firemans carry, unfortunately. I didn’t expect them to be in it though.
May 18th, 2009 on 5:01 pm
Are you happy with the stats they gave you in the game?
May 18th, 2009 on 5:53 pm
So, overall would you say most of the fighers you’ve played with felt like different fighters rather than just “kickboxing/wrestling” templates applied to them?
May 18th, 2009 on 6:08 pm
hey Joe, how did you get the game so early? Also which belt are going to collect first in career mode
?
May 18th, 2009 on 6:51 pm
can u beat up joe rogan
May 18th, 2009 on 6:51 pm
is ur signature move the heel hook??
May 18th, 2009 on 7:14 pm
How are the loading times? I’m picking my game up tomorrow!! I’m so excited.
May 18th, 2009 on 7:29 pm
Joe whats your gamertag..
Im ExJihadKiller on PS3
May 18th, 2009 on 8:52 pm
Hey Joe,
in an interview recently you said you were going to create the real joe lauzon. Have you done that yet, and how do you like the creation mode if you have?
May 18th, 2009 on 10:19 pm
Gotten a Gogoplata yet? I’ve been trying to figure out if they have arm triangles, do they?
May 18th, 2009 on 11:17 pm
What kind of scores do the judges give, are they pretty accurate?
May 19th, 2009 on 5:15 am
Joe,
Are u playing this on 360 or ps3? If 360 I challenge u lol I suck but luckily I’ve played worse people online 5-0 =)
May 19th, 2009 on 6:46 am
Okay – so Rylie, Chuck’s nephew wants to know which system can you buy the game for – is it only for PS3? or can you buy for PS2? Anyways – he can’t wait – sounds siiiiiiick
May 19th, 2009 on 7:19 am
the game is so good, picked it up at midnite and played for a good hour or so, 3-0 in my UFC career so far all KO via GNP stoppages. Tried playing online and some kid picked Brock Lesnar and just Lay and Prayed the entire first round, and in the second I got caught and knocked down for the TKO stoppage… i hope everyone doesn’t end up picking heavyweight just to play as lesnar.
May 19th, 2009 on 7:34 am
The stats are pretty good for my guy. The main thing is my cardio is not very good… so I get tired fast and taken down easily and submitted easily. But if you pace yourself and go in short flurries, he does well. My problem is that I keep pushing the pace and end up gassing and losing.
Each fighter has a unique feel for sure… definitely don’t feel like templates. Also, each has different strengths so if guys were identical in moves, you would still play with them different based on what they were good/weak at.
No leg locks in the game other than the kneebar. So no toe holds, straight ankles or heel hooks.
No gogoplata or arm triangle either.
Load time is alright…. not amazingly fast but its not annoying. There is a few seconds of load time before the fight goes and thats it.
Haven’t made “the real Joe Lauzon” yet. I will though… pretty soon.
To be honest, not sure we have gone to decision yet. We have gotten close… but don’t think we have seen one yet.
I am playing on 360.
Pam, Its out for 360 and PS3… but not PS2.
May 19th, 2009 on 2:31 pm
If anyone wants a decent match on 360 add prodlgy x
The I is actually a lower case L and I don’t remember if the o is a zero or a letter lol. But if the profile says im 915 team hawaii then that’s me. Hope to figth some of u soon
May 19th, 2009 on 2:33 pm
The worst part about the game is that if you disconnect it does not count as a loss, so as soon as you start beating someone online the sore losers just turn off the xbox. Until they fix it online is a waste of time so I am going to go more into career mode and Classic fights.
Have you had any issues Joe?
May 19th, 2009 on 3:24 pm
Hey Joe, is it true that Clay Guida isn’t on the game becasue of his long hair was messing up the game play? And also that all southpaws are switched to conventional?
May 19th, 2009 on 4:58 pm
hey joe how deos it feel playing as yourself in the game
and any chance you can say when you expect to be fighting again looking faward to your return
May 19th, 2009 on 9:12 pm
Thanks – much appreciqated – sounds like a blast – must be a trip seeing yourself in a video game.
May 19th, 2009 on 10:59 pm
Been playing since the demo came out, nice to finnaly play the real game with all the fighters…. and i must say youre guy has the quickest 1,2 combos, i can just sit there all day xyxyxyxyx.. but that would be no fun, pretty solid at takedowns, and a good ground game just like in real life…. it is RIDICULOUS how much detail you can add to a character, i mean body hair and ear damage….. really got me… good stuff man… whats your live id so i can get a match with you sometime??
May 19th, 2009 on 11:02 pm
ohh and im 8-0 in carreer mode right now…. those tapots dont come easy, i cant feel my thumbss after spinin the right analog so much, im sure you know what i mean..
May 20th, 2009 on 1:27 am
I have noticed that ground and pound is extremely difficult against BJJ’ers. They endlessly do complex reversals, and submission attempts, making it impossible to get any good damage at higher difficulties. I even notice that the guys who are famous for ground and pounding through even the best defenses (GSP and Hughes) aren’t able to do so in this game. It’s a bit disappointing if you want to be a powerhouse wrestler, because ground and pound is very fun, and it’s not ideally recreated in this game. The game is a blast though…very much fun.
May 20th, 2009 on 1:29 am
By the way…Joe…is this really you? My wife and I are huge fans…just wanted to know…how about posting a picture saying “Yes Bob…it’s really me”
